Orchard promotion shows exciting ambition of tv & commercial production team
Robert Light started his working life as a researcher 13 years ago – now he makes a move from head of the production team at the Cardiff-based Orchard Media and Events Group to Director of Creative Production and TV Programmes - collaborating with broadcasters, national agencies and brands across the world.
Reflecting the current boom in the creative industries in Wales, Orchard Production has grown dramatically over the past couple of years - from being a production partner alongside Smörgåsbord for the award winning atmospheric TV adverts that starred Hollywood star Luke Evans for Visit Wales; directing promotional films for the likes of UEFA and Principality Building Society; plus an expanding portfolio of broadcast productions for BBC, S4C and international broadcasters on a diverse range of content from Women’s Football to the Volvo Ocean Race, and the Pizza World Championships.
Over the past few years under Rob’s leadership and with a strong production team of 16, Orchard produced over 20 TV and radio programmes with revenues of over £1.5m in the most recent financial period. To maintain this momentum, Rob is taking up his new role, with Adrian Jones stepping into the Head of Production role, and the search now launched for a new experienced Producer / Director.
Rob said: “We’ve had a successful few years, and are way ahead of our plans at the outset. We have such a talented senior team with a variety of skills in commercials, corporate and TV programme production, and all with the key ability to tell a story. We now want to evolve further with a new structure to enable me to drive exciting new ideas with Orchard clients and partners around the world, produce larger scale TV commercials and programmes for a wider selection of clients and broadcasters, and a recruitment drive to bring more talent in.
“This sector is an exciting place to be at the moment in Wales, and I believe that collaboration of all kinds is the way to sustain success. At Orchard we are very lucky to work with some great clients, agencies and broadcast partners and we look forward to building on those relationships in the future.”
Orchard Production’s ethos is to combine high quality imagery with the art of storytelling. The experienced senior production team features Senior Director and Creative Ynyr Ifan, who has created network TV commercials for companies such as Motonovo; Orchard’s Head of Production, Adrian Jones, has worked with the BBC, ITV and S4C, and joined Orchard from Boomerang; experienced Line Producer and Production Manager Rhidian Evans has an impressive track record, working on the likes of Stella, Doctor Who, Torchwood and Little Britain.
Orchard TV credits to date include two programmes for BBC Wales on the Welsh Women’s Team, Women in Red; Mike Phillips a’r Senghenydd Sirens for S4C on the rugby star’s coaching role in Women’s Rugby; Bois y Pizza, a four-part series which followed two Welshmen around Europe in their quest for World Pizza Championship glory; and the round the world odyssey of Anglesey’s Bleddyn Môn, the Rookie of the Race in the latest Volvo Ocean Race, the world’s most challenging & prestigious sailing event.
Orchard collaborated on the Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water campaign which netted three awards at this year’s Chartered Institute of Marketing Awards, working with Heavenly, and Hollywood actor Matthew Rhys to produce the For Wales. Not for Profit ads and experiential events - “a team Wales approach that didn’t just deliver, but delighted” (Morgan Lloyd, Head of Marketing Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water).
Orchard is also part of Cardiff’s high value screen collaboration, Clwstwr Creadigol. Amanda Thomas, Head of People and Performance at Orchard said: “There is huge potential to continue the great partnerships we have as an industry and to ensure we continue to support the growth of the sector by providing opportunities and experiences for all.”
